Speech and language

Speech refers to the actual sounds of language. Expressive language refers to how a person combines words to express his thoughts and feelings. Receptive language refers to how a person understands language. Contact us if your child, adolescent, or teen :

  • has difficulty producing certain speech sounds.

  • has difficulty using words or formulating sentences to communicate at an age appropriate level.

  • has difficulty understanding information and following directions.

  • has been diagnosed with apraxia

Our therapists are PROMPT trained and have extensive experience with speech and language disorders.

Call us for an evaluation.

Feeding and swallowing

When a person with feeding difficulties visits us, we look for the root cause of the difficulty:

  • sensory

  • physical

  • oro-myofunctional

Our therapists have training in feeding and swallowing as well as oro-myofunctional training from the International Association of Orofaical Myology (IAOM)

Schedule an appointment to help determine the root cause and appropriate plan of care.

Gestalt language Processors

We follow the Natural Language Acquisition Framework with our Gestalt Language Processors.

Literacy

Difficulty with literacy is often an expression of underlying language difficulties. Literacy is an important part of a Speech Language Pathologist’s scope of practice. If your child is struggling with reading, our therapist can help with

  • phonemic and phonological awareness

  • comprehension

We follow the Science of Reading framework.

Alternative and augmentative communication

Sometimes, a Speech language pathologist may recommend a speech generating device (SGD) to supplement oral communication. A person may benefit from a SGD if:

  • they are verbal communicators but find it difficult to communicate verbally in certain environments or at certain times of the day. This has been reported by Autistic individuals.

  • they have apraxia of speech, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or any condition that affects intelligibility.

  • they are emerging or limited verbal communicators.

Evaluations

Evaluations are an important part of therapy and are a process of discovery. Parts of our evaluation are simply observation, and other parts are more hands on. As a parent, you can expect to answer a lot of questions about your child, adolescent, or teen during an evaluation. We really want to get to know everything they are capable of doing and what things motivate them and make them happy. Our evaluation is aimed at finding their strengths so we can meet them at their current ability level. We also value our families and their unique perspectives and preferences. This helps us establish a working relationship aimed at growth and success. Together we develop a unique and individualized plan of care.

We also know that an evaluation is just a picture in time. Our evaluation process is on-going. Each session is a dynamic process of growth and constant re-evaluation. We are constantly assessing ourselves to make sure we are on the right track with your child and offering them the best strategies to help them maximize their time with us.

Our Approach to Therapy

Respect for our clients’ individuality drives our therapy approach. We understand that each individual is unique in the way they learn and relate to others. We start from a place of respect, understanding, and compassion. Everyone learns best when they are happy and in a trusting and safe environment.

Play is an integral part our therapies. Everyone learns best by doing what they love. Child-led play promotes language, socialization, and problem solving. Our clients have fun because we have fun with them!

But real progress is only possible when families are involved. We respect and appreciate our families and the trust they place in us. We provide guidance and parent education for ongoing practice at home.
